Katy & ArthurMy name is Katy Anderson. I have had over 17 years experience of working with children and young people, including those who are typically developing and those who have a wide range of special needs and disabilities. I have worked in a variety of services, including a local authority Portage service, early years settings, schools, local charities, residential short breaks services, play services, family homes, and out and about in the local community.

Five years ago, I set Katy’s Helping Hands to provide services to families who have a child with additional needs. Since becoming a Mum to my little boy, I have decided that childminding would enable me to use my skills and knowledge to provide home based care for other children, as well as my son.

I have a First class degree in Early Childhood Studies and Special Needs and Inclusive Education, as well as a Foundation Degree in Early Years Care and Education, and an NVQ3 in Early Years Care and Education. I have attended many additional Professional Development training courses, including PECS, TEACCH, Signalong, Managing Challenging Behaviour, epilepsy (including rescue medication), naso-gastric, gastrostomy feeding and Domiciliary Care Medication.

My approach to working with children has always been nurturing, and since having my son, I have read widely about the importance of a responsive, gentle approach and it’s positive impact on neurodevelopment, and this is something that I use in my work with other children too. For that reason, I am happy to babywear, support breastfeeding and babyled weaning, support gentle sleep routines, and use gentle behaviour techniques. I’m also happy to work with parents following more traditional parenting styles. What matters is that you and your child are happy and confident in my setting.
